Detoxification
HOW TO
IMPROVE YOUR HEALTH, STOP DISEASE, AND REVERSE AGING.
People now carry within their bodies a modern-day
chemical cocktail derived from industrial chemicals, pesticides,
food additives, heavy metals, anesthetics, and the residues of pharmaceutical,
legal drugs (alcohol, tobacco, caffeine), and illegal drugs (heroin,
cocaine, marijuana, E, speed).
Toxins undermine our health. Elson Haas, M.D.,
in his book Staying Healthy with Nutrition, defines a toxin simply
as “any substance that creates irritating and/or harmful effects
in the body, undermining our health or stressing our biochemical
or organ functions.”
Toxins such as chemicals, heavy metals (lead,
cadmium, mercury), polychlorinated biphenyl’s (PCBs) and pesticides
have become part of our world. They are hard to avoid and even harder
to remove once they have embedded themselves into our tissues.
Today people are exposed to toxic chemicals in
far greater concentrations then were previous generations: for example,
over 69 million Americans live in areas that exceed smog standards;
most drinking water contains over seven hundred chemicals, including
excessive levels of lead; some three thousand chemicals are added
to the food supply; and as many as ten thousand chemicals in the
form of solvents, emulsifiers, and preservatives are used in food
processing and storage, which can remain in the body for years.
After living for thousands and thousands of years
in chemical balance, mankind, in the last hundred years has literally
changed the chemistry of our environment through the progressive
poisoning of nature with the chemical by-products of modern agriculture,
industry, power generation, and transportation. The chemical changes
these poisons cause are not confined to areas of local release.
Scientists have found evidence of pollution every where on earth,
from the largest cities to the remote and isolated South Pole.
To give you an example of the quantity of poison
we are exposed to each year, consider the following amounts released
into the environment in 1989 alone:
- Over 550,000,000 pounds of industrial chemicals
were dumped into public sewage storage.
- More than 1,000,000,000 pounds of chemicals
were released into the ground, threatening our natural ground
water sources.
- Over 188,000,000 pounds of chemicals were discharged
into surface waters, i.e. lakes and rivers.
- More than 2,400,000,000 pounds of air emissions
were pumped into the atmosphere.
- The grand total of chemical pollutants released
into the environment was 5,705,670,380 pounds. That is enough
to fill a line of semi-trailers parked bumper to bumper and having
a cargo capacity of 45,000 pounds each, stretching from downtown
Los Angeles to Des Moines, Iowa!
Toxins in Our Food
In the United States, we allow 10,000 food and
chemical additives into our food supply. The average American eats
about fourteen pounds of additives a year. In addition to colorings,
preservatives, flavorings, emulsifiers, humectants, and antimicrobials,
we consume on average 120 pounds of sugar and eight pounds of salt.
Internal Pollution
With the number of bacteria in the colon being
estimated at 10,000,000,000 per gram of fecal material, it is suggested
that we have a greater number of bacteria than we have human cells.
These bacteria release byproducts; some of which have healthful
effects while others can be toxic.
Our Health May Be Adversely Affected!
Consider the example of Mr. Thomas Latimer, as
reported in the Wall Street Journal. Hours after treating his lawn
with a pesticide, he experienced dizziness, nausea, and a pounding
headache that intensified. Despite extensive medical care, he continued
to get worse and now suffers from visual and concentration difficulties,
speech impairment, nightmares, brain seizures and takes anti, epileptic
medication. He no longer rides a bike and even has difficulty walking.
The collective medical opinion was that an anti-ulcer medicine he
was taking suppressed his liver’s ability to detoxify the
pesticide he was exposed to. With his natural defenses compromised,
the poison carried out a potent and ongoing attack on his nervous
system.
Mr. Latimer is not the only victim. Recent estimates
suggest that each year there are 3,000,000 severe pesticide poisonings
with 220,000 deaths worldwide. Pesticide-related illnesses in the
United States are estimated to occur between 150,000 and 300,000
times a year. This situation begs an important question! What can
we do to protect ourselves from the damaging effects caused by toxins
in our environment, food, or even internal pollution?
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) currently
recognizes more than four million chemical compounds. More than
60,000 of these are produced commercially, with three new compounds
introduced each day. In 1992, the EPA published the results of a
study in which the urine of 7,000 randomly sampled Americans was
tested for toxic chemical residues. The Results!
Chemicals like pentachlorophenol, a wood preservative,
and others were found in 71 percent of individuals tested. There
were not people working at chemical factories or industrial waste
incinerators. This study looked at the average citizen – you
and me. It is disconcerting to find such a high percentage of individuals
with chemical residue in their urine. These are all chemicals not
even in existence 100 years ago.
To make matters worse, food and product labels
do not always list every ingredient. When people consume these foods
- especially seafood, meat, and poultry - they ingest all the chemicals
and pesticides that have remained as contaminants accumulating in
the food chain.
With such a massive attack on our health we should
all be sick from toxic overload. And we are! A body overloaded with
toxins can result in a number of symptoms. These include but are
not limited to constipation, stomach bloat, poor digestion, gas,
fatigue, weight gain, excessive mucus, poor concentration, headaches,
poor skin, poor memory, depression, body odor, and bad breath.
In no other time in the history of the world has
degenerative disease been as prominent as it is today. Diseases
that were rare or unheard of a century ago are now raging upon us
like a plague. Millions are dying from diseases that were virtually
unknown in the past.
Most, if not all, chronically ill individuals
are suffering from neurotoxin exposure (toxins that effect the Nervous
System). According to Doctors John Foster, M.D., Patricia Kane,
PhD and Neal Speight, M.D. these neurotoxins impact the following
patient populations: Fibromyalgia, MS, Autism, CFS, Cardiovascular
Disease, Depression, Rheumatoid Arthritis, IBS, Infertility, ALS,
Parkinsons, Lyme, Toxic Building Syndrome, Estuary Associated Syndrome,
Psychosis, Diabetes without family Hx, Optic Neuritis, Pulmonary
Hemorrhage, Stroke. The removal of toxins, which often act as neurotoxins,
can be as challenging as the symptoms they produce.
Experts tell us that by the time we reach middle
age, each one of us will have already been affected by either cancer,
cardiovascular disease, or some other serious degenerative condition.
Conventional medicine has no sure cure. Drugs, surgery, and radiation
treatments can be as dangerous and debilitating as the diseases
they attempt to cure.
Nature, however, has provided us with the solution.
Our bodies are amazingly resilient. If the disease-causing toxins
are removed, the body will heal itself. Detoxification therapy can
helps to rid the body of chemicals and pollutants and can facilitate
a return to health.
Through detoxification therapy you can free yourself
from the chains of pain, reverse degenerative conditions, gain more
energy, feel and look younger, improve your memory, and be happier.
Virtually all the diseases of modern society, including many chronic
illnesses, can be avoided or even cured by sensible systematic detoxification.
How Do You Know if Your Body Requires Detoxification?
According to David Steinman, former representative
of the public interest at the National Academy of Sciences, everyone
has a specific level of tolerance that cannot be exceeded if good
health is to be maintained. If the amount of toxins within the body
stays below that level, the body can usually adapt and rid itself
of these. "However," says Steinman, "when the system
is overwhelmed, the body's defense mechanism malfunctions, and symptoms
such as fatigue, confusion, aggression, pain or mental disorder
may occur."
Great care must be taken to insure the safe and
effective removal of toxins, and any detailed detoxification therapy
should be administered only after a consultation with a qualified
health professional.
Indications that the body may need detoxification
are headaches, fatigue, joint pain, recurrent respiratory problems,
back pain, allergy symptoms, insomnia, mood changes, and food allergies.
Conditions such as arthritis, constipation, IBS, hemorrhoids, sinus
congestion, ulcers, psoriasis, skin conditions and acne, growths,
chronic illnesses and cancer strongly suggest the need for detoxification.
Some Preliminary Cautions
A key question to ask yourself is: am I well enough
to undertake rapid and active detoxification or should I string
the process out and do the job slowly? If a person is robust and
vital, a more vigorous program may be required than if the person
is unwell and somewhat fragile in health. People who are recovering
drug users, alcoholics, diabetics, or who have eating disorders
should not apply any method without strict medical supervision.
It is also important to note that detoxification
may not be appropriate for individuals who are underweight or physically
weak, or for those people with a hypothyroid or a hypoglycemic condition.
Anyone with a cancerous condition, or who is just recovering from
surgery, should always consult a qualified health professional before
any detoxification program is carried out.
