Every
day people visit the drugstore searching for a remedy that
will eliminate their heartburn once and for all, alleviate
their constipation or diarrhea, or relieve their bloating
and gas.
What
they do not realize is that drugs will not ultimately solve
their problems. A much more effective strategy is to treat
the source the cause of the digestive distress… |
| The
digestive system is the, first line
of defense against illness and yet the most often ignored -
until there is a problem. If
your digestive system is not working efficiently, you will not
be able to maintain or restore health no matter how much nutrient-rich
food you are eating. |
Digestive disorders lies at the root of most health problems. The
human suffering and the social, medical, and economic costs of gastro-intestinal
diseases and disorders, that have become so common here and in the
United States, are nothing short of enormous – representing
a huge share of our annual health care expenditure, as well as a
large loss in productivity.
- Digestive diseases can be life-threatening; colorectal cancer
is the second leading cause of death from cancer
in the United States.
- More Americans can be
hospitalized for digestive diseases than for any
other type of illness.
- Diarrhea is the third leading cause of death by disease worldwide,
claiming the lives of the most vulnerable: children and the elderly.
Health statistics
also show that more Americans are hospitalized due to diseases
of the digestive tract than for any other group of disorders. The direct medical costs of these diseases is estimate
to be $20 Billion or more per year.
Digestive diseases rank second among all causes of disability
due to illness in the United States. They result
in an estimated 200,000 absences from work each day!
The annual sales of prescription and over-the-counter drug products
used for digestive diseases is approximately $2 - 2.5 billion per
year, and has been growing at a steady 10% rate over the last decade.
The following breakdown, a "barometer" of sorts, adequately
demonstrates the fact that these problems are a significant public
health problem, contributing substantially to overall health care
costs.
• Laxatives - $850 - 900 million
• Antihermorrhoidals - $250 million
• Antidiarrheals - $100 million
• Antacids - $1 billion
While many digestive
problems are more common as people get older, they can occur at
any age, even in children. All Americans are susceptible to digestive
problems, regardless of gender, ethnic or socioeconomic backgrounds.

The numerous disorders known collectively as digestive diseases
include serious and potentially life-threatening illnesses, such
as cirrhosis of the liver, inflammatory bowel disease, hepatitis,
cancer, ulcers, and gallstones and well as more frequent, but less
serious illnesses such as acute gastroenteritis, gastroesophageal
reflux disease (GERD) and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
These acute and chronic disorders have the common element of affecting
the digestive tract, which includes the, stomach, esophagus, liver,
gall bladder, pancreas, small and large intestines.
Chronic
digestive problems, including incomplete digestion of food, poor
absorption of nutrients, or a sluggish bowel resulting in the poor
elimination of waste matter,
will lead to the deterioration of health.
Excess gas and bloating can be caused by foods
trapped inside the gut and can cause irritable bowel syndrome or
other inflammatory bowel conditions.
Low levels of hydrochloric acid or other digestive
enzymes result in partially digested food particles ending up in
the bloodstream consequently triggering food allergies. These and
other conditions precipitated by improper digestion will lead to
a toxic colon and chronic illness.
One of the most neglected aspects of digestion is the elimination
of waste matter. Proper intestinal elimination is critical to our
health. A sluggish bowel (constipation) causes retention of toxic
byproducts of normal digestion and harmful bacteria present in the
bowel, as well as toxic chemicals from the air, water, and food.
Toxins lingering in the intestines eventually end up back in the
bloodstream and can trigger illness. Research scientists have linked
several conditions to a toxic bowel such as acne, chronic fatigue,
inflammatory bowel disorders, psoriasis and behavioral disorders.
A sluggish, toxic bowel is a common problem overlooked by most
physicians. However, recently research scientists have begun
to uncover the mechanisms by which “death begins in the colon.”
Mounting evidence supported by the efforts of these leading-edge
scientists point to a toxic bowel as one of the causes of a wide
variety of illnesses. Their conclusion is that a toxic bowel and
the illness that follows is a result of the standard American diet
(S.A.D.).
The AMA Approves
Not too long ago the American Medical Association (AMA) approved
the use of nutritional supplementation.
In 1997 the following
appeared in the Journal of the American Medical Association, “The
era of nutrient supplements to promote health and reduce illness
is here to stay…There is overwhelming evidence of immunological
enhancement following such an intervention.”
For those persons who have been supplementing for the last 40 years
while ignoring their doctor’s negative appraisal of supplements,
it’s not news.
We've all had occurrences
of digestive disorders at one time or another. However, chronic
digestive disturbances can create deficiencies and more serious
problems down the line. In order to maintain health at all levels,
our ability to digest and absorb our nutrients is essential.
The liver, gall bladder, stomach, spleen, large and small intestines, kidney and bladder are all organs of the body that plays
a role in our digestive processes. If any of these organs are not
functioning properly, digestive disturbances can occur. In order
to maintain these organs in a healthy state, a complete functional
health evaluation of the entire digestive systems is needed.
Digestive diseases and their associated long-term complications
have catastrophic social and economic consequences.
“Digestive diseases take a terrible toll on the health
and well-being of Americans,” said Dr. Zerhouni MD Director
of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) “With more
than 70 million people affected and 1.4 million disabled, now is
the time to examine the state of digestive diseases research and
to develop a plan to most effectively take advantage of advances
in the field.”
